I feel its early morning and the sun is rising starting to light up this side of the world.
A few people look as if they are setting off for a journey maybe to town or to find someplace new to live. The one in a red jacket seems to be looking back at something maybe to admire the sun rise or to check on the last person there on the horse.
The painting gives off a day that holds many possibilites.
The river that flows below between the hills would a sight to see in the early morning as it glistens from the suns rays.
The path they take it has been taken by many before them so it does seem like they are taking on a new adventure or to a nearby town to trade.
Lovely painting!

Going from left to right, the trees get larger, with the ones near the cliff being very thin. In nearly exactly the middle of the painting, they get thicker, and to the right edge of the painting, they are at their largest. As they get larger, they also get closer to the foreground.
